CLÉMENT, Jean Laurent Born 1783 Mirecourt, Worked 1810-1848 Paris France. Established workshop at 16 rue des Petits Champs, Paris 1810-1848. Some labels give the address as rue St-Orge or rue des Bons-Enfants. Employed Georges Chanot, Augière, Calot, and Thomassin, and enjoyed reputation as a leading authority. The workshop produced fine instruments in the current Parisian style after Lupot. Medal winner at Paris Exhibitions 1823 and 1827. Also made guitars, some highly decorated. Er wohnte erst in der Rue Croix des Petits-Champs und dann in der Rue des Bons-Enfants. Er arbeitete sauber nach italienischen Vorbildern und hatte gutes Holz und einen hübschen, dunkelrothbraunen Lack. In der Geschichte des Geigenbaus ist er weniger wegen seiner Arbeiten von Bedeutung, als in seiner Eigenschaft als Lehrmeister einer ganzen Reihe von trefflichen Schülern, unter denen G. Chanot, Augière, Calot, Thomassin u. A. hervorragen. Er machte fortgesetzt allerlei interessante Versuche und verschiedene Erfindungen; so liess er sich u. A. mit L. V.
