FALISSE, Auguste Born 1883 Liège, died 1951 Brussels Belgium. Apprenticed to Delinet in Mirecourt. Worked briefly for Silvestre and Maucotel in Paris, then with Mougenot in Brussels. Established own workshop in Ixelles, Brussels 1905, assisted by his son from 1912. Stradivari and Guarneri models with shaded varnish. Sometimes used commercial varnish provided by Angell of Bristol. His instruments imported to London by Boosey & Hawkes. Influenced by acoustic theories of Dr. Chenantais of Paris. At a competition in Paris 1912 judged to be superior in tone to a Stradivari. This event celebrated on his label: Vainqueur du Concours International de Violon—Paris 1912 / (1er sur 42 concurrents, tant anciens que modernes) / Auguste Falisse / Luthier du Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles / Anno.. 19.. Aug. Falisse / Luthier / Concours de Paris 1912 / Bruxelles Auguste Falisse / Imported by Boosey & Hawkes / Sole London Agents
