Biographies
John Dilworth
GAIDA, Giovanni Born 1862 Bollengo, Ivrea Italy, died 1939 London UK. Began work in France. In London from 1890, but returned to Ivrea 1895-1904 where his sons Silvio and Cesare were born. Back in London he worked for the Stainer Manufacturing Co., a commercial business, and then for F. W. Chanot before establishing his own workshop in Castle Street, Long Acre. Very fine work on classical models with rich tastefully shaded varnish, generally recalling Pressenda. No violas or cellos recorded. Some instruments supplied to Edward Withers for sale and bear his label; some also made for Dykes & Sons. Those made for Chanot bear the Chanot label but are branded internally: ‘G. G.’ Gaida Giovanni / Fabbricatore d’instrumenti ad arco / Ivrea 1903 [BVMA]
