GENNARO, Giacomo Born circa. 1627, died 1701 Cremona Italy. Pupil and assistant of Nicolò Amati 1641-1646, and probably continued to contribute to the workshop long after that although no longer resident in the Amati house. His own work is rare, and he is best known for several interesting contralto violas that reflect the work of the earlier generations of the Amati family rather more than that of his master Nicolò. The scroll is a little like those of Andrea Guarneri, but the soundholes have short narrow wings like those of Andrea Amati. Whether this was a deliberate attempt to make instruments in an older manner to satisfy a demand for well-aged instruments cannot be proven. A handful of violins are also recorded. Very few original labels are known, presumably having been swapped for Amati or other better-known Cremonese names.
