MELEGARI, Enrico Clodoveo Born 1835 Porporeo, Parma, died 1895 Turin Italy. Employed in the dockyard in Genoa, where Enrico Rocca also worked at the same period. Established in Turin with brother Pietro, below, as Fratelli Melegari c.1873. Initially at 20 via Belfiore, in 1873 they moved to 4 via Po, close to the shop of A. Guadagnini. Continued to use the ‘Fratelli’ label until 1879 despite the earlier death of Pietro. Extemporised work loosely based on classical models. Red-brown and yellow varnish. Very popular and prolific exemplars of the late 19th century Italian school. Some instruments branded on lower rib: ‘Melegari’ Fratelli Melegari / fecero in Torino nell’ anno 18.. / via Belfiori.
