    Mirecourt, Paris, 1865–1942

    Claude Auguste THOMASSIN (1865-1942) was a distinguished French bow maker, born in Mirecourt and later establishing his own workshop in Paris. Apprenticed to C. N. Bazin and having worked for Gand & Bernardel, he developed a distinctive Paris style influenced by Voirin. His prolific output is recognized by bows typically featuring a round, dark stick, branded "C.THOMASSIN A PARIS".

    Life

    Claude Auguste THOMASSIN (1865-1942) was a bow maker born in Mirecourt in 1865. As a youth, he was apprenticed to C. N. Bazin., he subsequently went to Paris around 1885 to work for Gand & Bernardel. Henri Poidras notes that he was called upon by the Maison Gand & Bernardel towards 1890 to take charge of their bow making department. In 1901, he established his own business at 37 Rue de Paradis in Paris. He died in 1942 in Tribaldou, Seine et Marne, during a fishing expedition.
