Eugene Nicolas Sartory

Paris, 1871–1946

Eugene Nicolas SARTORY (1871-1946) was a highly esteemed French bow maker, born in Mirecourt and active in Paris. A pupil of his father, Joseph Eustache, and trained by C. Peccatte and A. Lamy, he established his own workshop at the age of 18. He is recognized for his consistent work, often based on a strengthened Voirin model, evolving from early designs with nickel-silver fittings to later bows featuring richer decorations, gold, tortoiseshell, and 'Paris eyes'. His work earned him numerous international awards, including the Paris Grand Prize in 1900 and the title of 'Officier d'Academie'.

Maker Overview

Life

Eugene Nicolas SARTORY (1871-1946) was born in Mirecourt in 1871 and died in Paris, France in 1946. He was a bow maker, recognized as one of the finest archetiers of the twentieth century, responsible for sustaining the dominant French tradition. Son and pupil of Joseph Eustache, he worked for C. Peccatte and A. Lamy in Paris. He established himself independently in Paris from the age of 18 in 1889 at 12 boulevard Bonne-Nouvelle, moving to 13 rue du Faubourg Poissonière in 1902, and finally to 3 Trévise from 1912. By 1914, he was employing others in his shop, but the business was closed for the duration of the First World War while he was in National Service. From 1918, the shop flourished, and he delegated work to L. Morizot, J. Fétique, and L. Gillet. He also opened a branch in Le Perreux-sur-Marne, a suburb of the capital.

Characteristics

Model
His work was based on a strengthened Voirin model as more robust towards the head.
Early Work Characteristics
Early bows featured a low head, a plain eye on the frog, and were restricted to nickel-silver due to economic constraints. They were made from dark pernambuco wood.
Later Work Characteristics
Later bows exhibited a broader head, more intricate decoration, a deeper throat to the frog, and a slightly flattened oval cross-section to the stick. Fittings became richer and more diverse, incorporating gold, tortoiseshell, and elaborate 'Paris eyes' in the frog.
Model Variations
Tourte and Lupot models also appeared.
Final Period
In the final period, most bows were made with octagonal sticks of lighter color.

Awarded honours at Brussels 1887, Lyons 1894, Liege 1905, Milan 1906, and London 1908. Appointed ‘Officier d’Academie’. Very consistent work, based on a strengthened Voirin model. Early work with a low head and plain eye on the frog, restricted to nickel-silver because of economic constraints. Dark pernambuco wood. Later work has a broader head, more intricate decoration, deeper throat to the frog and a slightly flattened oval cross section to the stick. The fittings also became richer and more diverse with gold, tortoiseshell, and elaborate ‘Paris eyes’ in the frog. Tourte and Lupot models appear, and in the final period most bows were made with octagonal sticks of lighter colour. Branded: ‘E.SARTORY A PARIS’ in two typefaces. [Millant/Raffin]
