Biographies

The overview above is drawn from the following published accounts. Read them in the original:

John Dilworth+

WHITMARSH, Emanuel Worked circa. 1856-1908 London UK. Stonemason and self taught violin maker established in Berwick Street, London 1856-1885. Carried out repair work for several shops. Also made a large number of violins of good trade quality. Various models, using both oil and spirit varnish. Later assisted by his son Edwin, above. Moved to Kentish Town Road 1885, Hackney 1887, and finally established in Dalston from 1908. Awarded silver medal at the Inventions Exhibition, London 1885.

William Meredith Morris+

I cannot give any biographical particulars, but I have seen a great deal of his work. Nor am I certain that the present Emmanuel Whitmarsh is the same that turned out excellent instruments some twenty-five or thirty years ago. The work does not seem to me to have the same characteristics. The present maker of that name makes principally for the wholesale houses. The Messrs. Dawkins, of 17 Charterhouse Street, Holborn Circus, have been his agents for some years past. The work is very carefully finished, and the tone usually clear, firm, and sweet.

George Hart+

Geigenmacher und -Händler der Gegenwart, der schon 1885 für seine Geigen und Bratschen eine Bronce-Medaille erhielt.
