BUBENIK, Johann Baptist Born 1800 Hrusice, died 1836 Prague Czech Republic. Pupil and successor (in 1823) of Caspar Strnad. Small output due to his early death. Stradivari-derived model with well-rounded upper bouts and outward-pointing upper corners. Gracefully extended pegbox in the manner of Gragnani, topped with a nicely concentric volute marked with a slender chamfer. Excellent materials and clean workmanship. Varnish generally well-textured gold-red/brown, often showing deep craquelure, although sometimes of thin spirit. Johann Bubenik / fecit Prague Anno 1825.
