Maker Overview

Gastone Bargelli was an Italian violin maker born in 1921. He was the son of Giuseppe Bargelli, a prolific and largely self-taught maker from Florence. Gastone assisted his father in his workshop at 12 Via Saponai.

His instruments sometimes bear a label that specifies he was an “alumnus” or “student of his father,” such as “Gastone Bargelli di Giuseppe, allievo del Padre fece in Firenze anno 1932.” This indicates he worked under his father’s tutelage. He made violins, violas, and cellos. His instruments are often noted for their golden-brown or reddish-brown varnish and a warm, rich tone.
