Nigel Harris

Nigel Harris is a British violin maker, researcher, and acoustician whose work has combined traditional violin making with scientific investigation into instrument acoustics. Active since the late twentieth century, he has built violins, violas, and cellos that are widely respected for their tonal power, balance, and responsiveness, and are played by professional musicians internationally.

Alongside his work at the bench, Harris has made a significant contribution to the study of violin acoustics through research, publications, and lectures, much of it undertaken in collaboration with Roger Sheldon. His investigations into arching, plate graduation, wood properties, and varnish have helped bridge the gap between empirical craftsmanship and modern acoustical science, influencing both makers and restorers.
