ASCHOW, John N. Born circa. 1885 Denmark, died 1939 Oakland, California USA. Apprenticed in Denmark and later a pupil at the Mittenwald School. Emigrated to the USA and worked for Kohler & Chase before opening a shop in Oakland, California 1906. Later assisted and succeeded by his son, also John, who maintained the business until 1969. Stradivari, Guarneri, and personal models. Own varnish based on copal and seed-lac. Local woods used. Sometimes imported pre-carved necks. 199 instruments recorded, violins violas, and cellos. Also made bows. Branded: J. N. ASCHOW 1928 No. 196 / J. N. Aschow / Oakland, Cal. U.S.A. [Wenberg]
