CLARE, Harold (Harry) Born 1884 Stretton, Cheshire, Worked Merthyr Tydfil and Whitley Bay UK. Musician and pupil of J. E. Harris in violin making. Established in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales c.1920; later in Whitley Bay, Northumberland. Stradivari and Guarneri models, and his own personal design adopted after 1925. Well executed. Oil varnished. Each instrument named after a celebrated virtuoso or maker. First prize at the Royal National Eisteddford, Pontypridd 1924 with a violin bearing the name of William Henley. Made bv Harry Clare / 19.. / ‘ Kreisler’/ at Merthyr Tydfil.
