John Dilworth

DERAZEY, Honoré (Jean-Joseph) Born 1794 Darney, died 1883 Mirecourt France. Apprenticed in Mirecourt, then employed in Paris at various ateliers. Established his own business in Mirecourt which was quickly very successful. Awards gained in Paris 1839, 1849 and 1855, and London 1851. Very prolific maker, especially after c.1844, following Stradivari and (rarely) Amati models. Many sold through J. B. Vuillaume who inserted his own label. Made several instruments passed off as the work of Gaspar Duiffoprugcar in the wake of misguided attempts to show that this maker, and not Andrea Amati, was the originator of the violin in Lyons in the early 16th century. Very fine professional work in the Vuillaume style, with red-gold shaded varnish (although of rather hard consistency) and fine materials. Less distinguished examples still bearing his label made after his death by his son Justin, Mangenot, and Laberte-Magnie briefly undermined his reputation. Branded on back interior: ‘H Derazey’ or ‘H.Derazey père’. Printed label: H. Derazey à Mirecourt / Médaille de 1re classe / Exposition Universelle 1855
