MANGENOT, Paul Alexandre Born 1862, died 1942 Mirecourt France. Apprenticed to Justin Derazey. Subsequently made cellos for Collin-Mezin. Then worked for Hel in Lille; also in Brussels, Geneva, Lyons, and Paris. Returned to Mirecourt 1888 where he acquired the business of Derazey. The company also owned the rights to the trade names of of D. Nicolas ainé and Honoré Derazey, and Mangenot continued these lines with the aid of several craftsmen in his employ. In 1920 these names were sold to Laberte. Mangenot thereafter made only his own labelled instruments. Prolific maker of violins, violas, cellos, and double basses in the Mirecourt tradition. Classical Cremonese models and fine professional craftsmanship. Excellent materials and dark orange or red-brown varnish. Signed: ‘P. Mangenot, père’. Branded: ‘P. Mangenot’.
