Biographies

The overview above is drawn from the following published accounts. Read them in the original:

John Dilworth+

Gabriel Adolphe Born 1804, died 1858 Paris. Son and pupil of Jacques-Pierre Thibout, below. Similar work to that of his father, although developed his own model based on the Guarneri del Gesù ‘Rode’ violin of 1734. These bear a facsimile of the original label with Thibout’s own addition: Imitation du Violon de Rode fait par Thibout, à Paris, 1834

Cecie Stainer+

Son of Jacques Pierre Thibout; b. 1804, at Paris; d. there, June 14, 1858. He assisted his father a long time and finally took the direction of the business in 1838. His instruments are good, though the work is not equal to his father’s ; the backs are generally of one piece, the varnish a red-brown colour. His son Albert was also a maker.

Henri Poidras+

Father of one preceding, pupil and successor of Jacques-Pierre. Work less interesting. Red brown varnish.
