Maker Overview

Life

Joseph VOIRIN (1837-c.1895) was born in Mirecourt, though sources contain conflicting information regarding his birth year, with Henri Poidras stating "towards 1830" and John Dilworth specifying 1837. He was the brother of François Nicolas Voirin. Joseph Voirin established himself independently in Paris from 1855, operating from the rue Sainte Marguerite. In 1867, he joined P. L. Gautrot at Chateau-Thierry near Paris, where he served as the head of the bow department for many years. John Dilworth notes that he was assisted by A. Lamy up to 1875, at which point Lamy left to work for Joseph's brother, François Nicolas.

Characteristics

Bow-making
Joseph Voirin was a talented bow-maker, and the rare and good sticks he signed possess genuine qualities.
Quality
John Dilworth describes his bows as fine, though he suggests they lacked the finesse of those made by his younger brother, François Nicolas Voirin.
Branding
His work was rarely branded, but when it was, it typically bore the mark "JH VOIRIN A PARIS".

Influence and legacy

  • Training: Joseph Voirin received his training in Mirecourt, probably with J. Simon.
  • Collaboration: He was assisted by A. Lamy up to 1875 during his time at P. L. Gautrot's workshops.
