SORSANO, Spirito Worked circa. 1714-1736 Cuneo Italy. Probably a pupil of Giofreddo Cappa. Workmanship and style very closely related. Arching low and very flat across the breast. Distinctive purfling showing long splits in the white centre. Soundholes set low and widely spaced, lightly fluted in the lower wings. Scroll very broad across the second turn, with a deeply scribed centre line around the peg box. One cello known with the ribs let into a channel on the inner edge of the back (as in earlier Piedmont and Flemish work) although this is not usual in Sorsana’s violins. Thin orange-brown varnish; very fine and delicate. Name liberally used in 19th century commercial work. Spiritus Sorsano / fecit Cunei 1736
